I have C500 too with a USB card. My guess is the cable's too long. 
That's the easy solution too. I see you're an Earthlinker like me. I 
have been pleased to use an Asante FriendlyNet 10/100 Cable/DSL 
Router. There are 2 models where one has a network print server 
connection and the other doesn't. It's very easy to set up. They have 
a Mac/PC manual and also online directions too at 
http://www.asante.com. My leaking brain forgot the price. There are 4 
outlets and the box says connections for 4 groups (253 users). I have 
only 3 Macs and S900's hooked up without problems. I like the built 
in firewall too.  The Earthlink  connection is mostly higher than 
average speed too (here's a speed test site 
http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/). According  to the site my 
connection at this time is graded as Fantastic with a download time 
of 7.1 seconds for a 1 MB file; so far I've been able to live with 
that kind of speed. Good luck.
