Sorry for the long post...... Wow! $49.00 2 years ago for a Router was a great price. I paid $39.00 after rebates for my DI604 and ID704. They are incredably well made and reliable. (D-Link usually makes their own equipment and other manufacturers buy and retrofit the innards with their name; at least per my info) I have found that IE 5 is a minimum for setting up the routers. Earlier versions and Netscrape had javascript problems (they still tend to for that matter) that would prevent some functions from working. I have successfully configured a Linksys (wired and wireless types), Compaq (wired and wireless types, surpisingly well made piece of hardware), the aforementioned D-link units, SMC and last but not least, 2 diferent Netgear models. So far the D-Link, Linksys, and one of the Netgear models (a newer one) had the best laid out configuration screens and the fewest configuration problems with a variety of web browsers.
As for the file sharing, you should have no problem, however, VERY few routers can pass AppleTalk protocols. Make sure that you are using TCP/IP based file sharing (AppleTalk (MacIP) I have had no problems with the above mentioned Linksys and D-Link units. My LaserWriter NTR, S900 (MacOSX), Pentium Laptop (Win95), PB5300 (OS8.6 though an old gaterbox), Dell (Win98), and a PM 6500 (OS9.1). All are run through the Router (3 are run through a hub connected to port 3 on the router) Sorry that I went so far off topic everyone. -Robyn J.
