The primary behavioral differences are in compatibilities with the lower slots.
The feature differences are as follows with the 9500/9600/Genesis thrown in:
S900
L2 cache: 512KB soldered to motherboard
DIMM sockets: Eight
CPU socket: Standard plus second slot for proprietary
secondary 604(e) CPU
PCI slots: Six with slot 1 extended for E100 card. 1 & 2
controlled by Bandit. 3-6 on PCI-PCI Bridge (DEC
21052AB).
Power Supply: Special, but uses same signals as ATX. ATX
adaptable by putting new connectors on ATX PS.
Motherboard Form Factor: Standard ATX
Sound ports: Rear stereo out. Front Stereo out and in.
Front jacks on special card not included with bare
motherboard. No rear microphone port.
ROMs: 4 MB stored on four 8 Megabit chips. Apple parts
341S0168 - 341S0171
PTP
L2 cache: Socket for motherboard cache. Supports 0, 256K, 512K and 1 MB.
DIMM sockets: Eight
CPU socket: Standard
PCI slots: Six. Slots 1 -3 controlled by Bandit 1. Slots
4 -6 controlled by Bandit 2.
Power Supply: Standard ATX
Motherboard Form Factor: Standard ATX
Sound Ports: Rear Stereo out and in.
ROMs: 4 MB stored on four 8 Megabit chips. Apple parts
341S0168 - 341S0171
9500/9600/Genesis
L2 cache: 512KB soldered to motherboard (except in 9600
Enhanced, AKA Kansas).
DIMM Sockets: Twelve
CPU socket: Standard
Power Supply: Special Apple. ATX can be adapted, but
requires both putting new connectors on wires, and
adding an inverter chip to the power-on signal.
Motherboard Form Factor: Special Apple. Adaptable to ATX
but requires sheet metal work.
Sound Ports: Rear Stereo out and in.
ROMs:
9500/Genesis: 4 MB stored on four 8 Megabit chips. Apple
parts 341S0168 - 341S0171
9600: ROMs: 4 MB stored on four 8 Megabit chips. Apple
parts 341S0280 - 341S0283
9600 Enhanced: 4 MB stored on four 8 Megabit chips. Apple
parts 341S0380 - 341S0383 (supports Speculative
Processing with G3/G4).
