I've been reading all the articles about fan noise and decided to do something about my J700. The original SUNON fan (KD1209PTB2) draws 2.2 watts and generates a whopping 33 dB noise level. I swapped this out with a Papst fan of equivalent size (Papst 3412 NGL) which draws 1.2 watts and has a noise rating of 23 dB. I also purchased a temperature controller for this fan, which you simply install between the motherboard and the fan. The temperature controller delivers somewhere between 6.5 and 12 volts to the fan, depending on the temperature.
Installation was a 5 minute thing. No soldering, no wirecutting, nearly idiot-proof. The fan cost about $18, the temperature controller about $12. The thing is so quiet now, you hardly know it is there. :-) After installing and testing, with and without the temperature controller, I'd have to say that the temperature controller is uneccessary. Even at full power (12 volts), the fan is whisper-quiet. So my suggestion, for anyone else who is sick of the fan noise on their machines, is to replace the Sunon fan with a Papst fan and be done with it. You still have nearly the full cooling power of the original fan, but can hear yourself think while you work. Of course, perhaps you need to blow around all that air if you've got a bunch of high-heat generating PCI cards and a few 10,000 RPM Ultra160 SCSI drives in there, but for most of us.... -DWass -- SuperMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
