I don't think that's correct.

Basically, think of it this way - our machines are not built to 
support booting into OSX directly.  Any time you boot into OSX  - 
unless from an existing XPF-booted version of OSX into itself - 
you'll need to do XPF (or similar) first.  If I understand correctly 
it pre-loads the NVRAM with the goods you need to be able to boot.

Yes, it's necessary when booting from 10.0.3 to a new install of 
10.1.5.  And it's necessary when booting from 9.1 to 10.1.5.

I don't know for sure if it's needed to boot from, say, 10.0.3 on one 
volume to 10.1.5 on another.
