Subject: [SM] Firewire success!

Hi all

Here's a report of a success for a change! I stuck the cheap firewire

card that came with my PC digital video edit package (total crap!) into

the OS 8.6 equipped J700, stuck in the firewire 2.4 package from Apple,

et viola! It found both the iBot and the JVC DVcam on the first try!

Using BTV Pro to watch them on for the moment..

So now, being bolstered by my success with that, I'm thinking of doing

an ATA controller and USB card next. Any suggestions of PC or other

cards which have worked well for you? What I'd like to do is get a

firewire/USB combo and an ATA card, thus using two slots instead of

three, or else getting a Tempo card which has all three onboard!

My question with the Tempo card, is how intellingent were they with it?

Does it have a controller which is run by the OS or the firmware itself,

which allows DMA from e.g. the firewire controller right to the ATA

controller? There's no reason for that to ever leave the card except

for the preview. At least not during capture. I'd be interested in

some benchmarks of how fast that puppy is at captureing from firewire to

ATA, while hitting the USB bus and playing a CD on the other ATA

channel.

Anyone tried this card yet, and/or loaded it up good to see how much it

can take before falling over?
