it sounds like either you got a bad install and should do a clean
install and try again, or you have some extensions you need to turn off.
 the mac os is bad about having all of it's extensions on when it's
installed, for example, even when installing on a desktop you get
extensions like battery monitor and expansion bay that only relate to
laptops etc.
