Hi Alan,
When I upgraded my C500 a couple of years ago, I went from OS 7.6.1
to OS 9.1 directly. At that time, the prevailing wisdom was to go
from 7.6.1 to 8.0 to 8.5 to 9.1 or some such order. My system was
unstable however and I used TechTool Pro (forgot what version)
several times to get rid of the fragmentation on my HD and other
problems. To start, my OEM 1 GB HD was about 80 % full and I think
the fragmentation was enough to cause stability problems. In
retrospect, I should have cleaned up the HD before the install of 9.1
from 7.6.1. Consider getting the C500 in good shape with pram zap,
desktop rebuild, using First Aid and a disk analysis program such as
TechTool Pro or TechTool Lite which is a free download from
www.versiontracker.com, Nortons or Disk Warrior. Then once you have
an OK machine, try the 9.1 install again. I found an install of OS
9.1 on another machine to introduce more fragmentation. So if you get
OS 9.1 installed, consider running some tests with TechTool, etc. to
make sure the install didn't create problems. Good luck.
Eric
