Manufacturers do still make read-only CDROMs, but look at how the prices of CDRW's have plummeted, they're so prominent now, standard in nearly all computers, and so cheap. As to the failure rate, I don't know, but like you, I have an old Yamaha 4x8 that is still going, and a new, but very inexpensive LG 8240 burner that has never failed to burn a disk at 24x.
