Hi there: I installed a 240 MHz processor in my Supermac c500 on Saturday
the 31st, upgrading from the factory-installed 180 MHz. It worked fine until
I powered up on Wednesday the 4th, when the fan started but nothing else
happened. After some exercise in language use I put in the old processor and
everything was fine. I called the distributor whose first thought was that
it had burned out because of inadequate ventilation; he said the 240 would
run somewhat hotter than the 180. The other item is that a thunderstorm went
through around 6 Wednesday morning, with one lightning strike pretty nearby.
The unit was not turned on at the time and there are two surge protectors in
line in the power line.

My questions are:

1) Is this fate or a bad processor or a lightning strike?

2) Since umax shipped these units with installed 240 processors at some
point, wouldn't the installed ventilation be enough? if not how can I up the
cooling ante short of a home-grown jury-rig?

3) Anything else I should do besides chalk it up to luck and maybe buy
another processor?
