I'm not familiar with "factory" but the Western Digital drives of my 
experience have three (actually four, but who uses CS?) settings, 
Master, Slave, Single.  In most instances, if the drive is alone on 
the cable it needs to be set to Single, not Master.    It sounds like 
your "Factory" setting is the same as Single.

Other brands don't have this quirk, I believe.
