the terminology has drifted over the years. since i was there, i'll attempt
to explain what has happened.

originally, years ago, an unwelcome electronic intruder was a Cracker.
a Hack was originally a clever stunt pulled on a campus like MIT or
Caltech, and the person pulling the clever stunt was a Hacker (things like
placing a fully functional VW bug on top of a building, that sort of stuff,
was a Hack.)

in programming terms, a Hack came to mean a clever/obscure/possibly very
ugly programming trick, and a Hacker was a hot programmer who could come up
with hacks.

over the past 20+ years, this terminology has changed and now,
unfortunately, Hacker is generally used to mean the unwelcome electronic
intruder. it's a shame that this has happened, but the media has seized on
hacker and i don't think the clock can be turned back.
