What machine is it on and is it SCSI or USB/FireWire?

For starters, if it's a SCSi or ATAPI/IDE drive, I suggest you go to

  <http://www.intechusa.com/>  ,

download and install the trial version of CD/DVD-SpeedTools.

Let the installer replace all of the Other CD drivers that it finds with
the CD/DVD SpeeedTools driver Restart your Mac and then startup Toast.

I have no trouble burning CD's @ 32x with a TDK burner in my Beige G3
(OS 9.2.1) using only the CD/DVD SpeedTools driver.
I use this same software setup on an SE/30 running an external 4x/8x
Sony burner running OS 7.1 and toast 3.5.7.
