It's a bit of a task, but I'd reformat the drive using HFS+ (which was
introduced with OS 8.1), and clean install OS 8.6 or even OS 9. Your C500
can easily run the more modern classic OS, although each one in succession
used a bit more memory for the System. That's a vote for upping the RAM at
the same time.

In any event, my suggestion is a time consuming, start from scratch, kind of
approach, but it would allow you to run whatever apps you want. The only
caveat is the driver for the CDROM drive, as always. But you probably
already know you'll need Apple CDROM extension 5.3.1, or Intech
CDSpeedTools.
