This is a long shot Frank, and I won't go into a lengthy explanation right now, but it's worth a try... Zap the PRAM before the startup chime would normally sound. You have to be quick with the vulcan death grip, but it's important that you hold down the PRAM zap keys (Command, Option, P, and R) immediately after choosing restart or power up. There's a short period of time after choosing restart before the normal startup chime sounds, and zapping in that short period clears a unique black screen of death problem related to an E100 enabler and XLR8 software.
