How about using the services of http://www.dyndns.com ?

There's also a Mac client which will automatically update dyndns' database
to reflect any updated IP address assigned by your cable company.

I'm making a study of this as I want to set an ftp server up (not for
anonymous access), in my case I'll be using a hardware router.

What provision should one make for firewalls on the Mac (OS9.2.2)? The
router will provide some of course.
