I had been running the software firewall called "DoorStop" and it 
would log dozens of probes every day and prevent access to all ports 
except by addresses allowed or designated by me. When I installed a 
hardware router, D-Link, as suggested by Nancy on this list, I kept 
Doorstop active to see what would happen. D-Link does such a good job 
that Doorstop has nothing to log. D-Link like other routers not only 
provides protection but enables my 3 computer network to 
simultaneously surf through my single IP cable account. I believe I 
paid about $20-25 for the router.
