My first experience with FW was a year ago when I bought a Sony FW
CD-RW and an Adaptec DirectDuo card with both USB 2.0 & FW onboard.
I was going to install it in my aging C600. The FW side showed up
but the USB was non-existent. BTW, John's comment about the card not
showing up properly in the Apple Profiler is spot on--ASP shows it as
an ethernet device! But I digress.

I sent in to Adaptec's support site complete documentation of the C
series and my FrankenMac, blah, blah. Frankly (not Shirley), Adaptec
was clueless and I felt rather dusted off by their lack of knowledge
and a concomitant cavalier attitude to my efforts at providing
relevant technical details to their product implementation--the
DirectDuo had just been released and I figured they would be
interested in hearing from reasonably well informed users, albeit a
home user in my case, what issues were becoming evident. Alas (not a
lad), Adaptec seemed not particularly interested besides offering a
refund on the card. I declined the offer; I wanted to get to the
heart of why the card wasn't working on a Mac system.

After a couple of exchanges on the list with Jeff W. (may his tents
be enlarged), the likely reason the Adaptec card didn't work was
because the C series PCI bus was not minimally PCI 2.1 compliant and
the card would be 2.2 compliant. Not the least of which the various
and sundry timing issues on the C mainboard demonstrated the validity
of Hessian partial derivative calculus computing critical points in 3
dimensional space. Feel the joy.

Now get this--a CompUSA card (FW & USB 1.1) installed and works
flawlessly and it cost $20. I installed the Adaptec card in a PC to
share the Sony burner. Adaptec support fell off my Christmas card
list last year. I'm watching too much Imus In The Morning on MSNBC.
