i found the FWB fire wire drivers to be a complete disaster, when using
firewire on the s900.( spent 1 week with fwb suport and disassemblers/stack
traces etc)

I spent over 3 weeks with the macally card , trying to get it to work, in
the end, i added an extra power supply to the actual drive ( instead of
trying to pull power over the cable) and it kicked into life first time.
ever since then i'm a convert.
