Charles, do you have the Firewire drivers in your Extensions Folder? If so, you might be able to get the card to work in the lower slots if you disable the Firewire extensions. If your configuration is good now, it's kind of a pointless exercise, but my experience was that the FW/USB cards I tried tended to freeze in the lower slots when the Firewire drivers loaded.
