OK. You've got step 1, 2, and 3 done. Now step 4 is mostly grunting and 
cussing at the aforementioned accursed side panel. Hold down those two 
tabs and pull.

I find it helpful if you rest the machine on it's side in your lap; 
place the front of the machine against your stomach. The push those 
tabs inwards and push away from you, in this position you can use your 
forearms to get some extra leverage. Once you have it moved a hairline, 
you can use your palms on the front side of the panel (near your 
stomach) to push it farther away. Do note that the panel only needs to 
slide back 1 or 2 inches, then it will just lift off.

There are other ways of doing this, but with this technique I can open 
the case in a matter of seconds without any bruised appendages and 
eternal damnation for my lack of decent language.
