To get around the Matshita drive non-booting problem, I've made good use of SCSI Zip drives in the past. Just dump a minimal System folder onto a 100mb Zip disc and Command/Opt/Shift/Del during bootup to force it to the Zip drive. Once the machine is booted from the Zip, you can insert your Norton disc (or any other) into the Matshita drive for maintenance.
