Get a web email address (Hotmail, Yahoo, or one of a hundred others) and use
it for all your Internet transactions. Use it for all but your best friends
and associates, and keep your main email address guarded. That way most spam
will be kept on that insignificant webmail account, and, over time, your
main email will just have a small manageable amount of spam.

Yahoo is quite good for this purpose. It separates bulk marketing email, and
allows blocking too. But the main thing is that with any webmail account,
it's out of sight and out of mind. Check it once a week, or once a month,
and simply delete all the garbage without ever having to read it. If it's
not residing on your hard drive, it's doesn't matter in the least.

For those few annoying spam emails that get to your main account, you can
use SpamCop to report them. It's, at the very least, a way of feeling
proactive against those evil spamming bastards.

Other than that you can explore filtering, like that used in Apple's Mail.
Mail is OS X only, but there are some good spam filters for OS 9 too.
