Hello everyone. I have a UMAX PC-compatible laptop (After their Mac OS clone license got Steved the company briefly went into the Kapok/Clevo rebadging business.)
This is actually quite a nice little machine (a rebadged Kapok 1100), which originally ran Windows 98 but which I currently have dedicated to Mandrake Linux 9.0. (The internal IBM TravelStar 4.68 GB HDD was first scrubbed clean of any vestige of Redmond using IBM's own Drive Fitness Test utility.) Two days ago I attempted to flash the BIOS to a lower revision in order to correct a problem booting (via LILO) Mandrake from the TravelStar. Something went goofy, and now the machine fails POST with a beep code from the built-in speakers: short-short-long pause short-short-short pause which, according to several sources, including: http://www.amd.com/epd/desiging/evalboards/14.elansc400/bios/syssoft/manual/ssman.pdf indicates that "No video adapter was found." I assume (read: HOPE!) that this is simply the result of a faulty or incorrect EEPROM flash on my part, but in order to drive out of this cul-de-sac, I'll need to find (and have been looking all over Tallahassee for) someone or some shop with an EPROM programmer with a 32-pin PLCC adapter. My best guess among the experts in this group would be Jeff Walther, who helped many of us a year or two ago with Twin Turbo EPROMs, but whom I didn't want to just e-mail out of the blue. Jeff, if you're there, am I barking up the right tree? SystemSoft MobilePRO BIOS Version 1.01 (2482-00) (probably stored on the Macronix MX28F2000 32-pin PLCC 2 Mbit (256 KB) Flash EPROM socketed to the motherboard) Cheers, Christian Liljestrand c m l i l j e s a t t f n d o t n e t (to reply, please remove spaces and make the appropriate substitutions) -- SuperMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
