And Jess, thanks, too, for your reply -- I hadn't yet seen it when I last posted. I would be interested if it turns out to be compatible, and in fact would like to make a couple of backups of one or more releases. 1.27 is the latest, but that's the one that apparently causes the HDD to be invisible to LILO (or perhaps just invisible altogether). 1.23 is the one which has apparently caused my current dead-in-the-water-ness.
