Hi Sybil,
If the Finder problem arose just after your grandson added the RAM, it may 
well be related and so worth the effort.  If not, then I'd zap the PRAM first 
unless you're comfortable digging down through the cables to the battery.  I 
zapped 6-10 times (just continue holding the option-cmd-P-R keys down after 
the first chime and continue through multiple cycles).  I actually did the 
more complete zap (PRAM + more NVRAM) by starting from a cold boot rather 
than a restart.

I recall some rather detailed instructions were posted a while back for 
opening the S900 case, should be similar for J700.  Good luck.
