You've raised two issues, maybe 3. I'll tackle each...

A. Yes, a C600 can run 9.1 as I'm doing so quite nicely. That's the
core question. But...

B. RAM for 9.1 really needs 64 MB, otherwise the paging needs will
be significant and bog down response. That raises...

C. Umax C series boxen are in great need of vast amounts of
psychotherapy because it almost seems as if there are multiple
personalities under the hood. The type of RAM users have installed
and had success with have varied. The 16 MB soldered on the mobo is
EDO. Keep in mind EDO is a subset of regular FPM and the benefits of
EDO would be lost in a mixed environment. Now add this into the
mix...

D. The C series was a simply an entry level, consumer (thus "C")
machine based on the Performa 6400, definitely not one of Apple's
best efforts. Umax's tweaking of the design (Kennedy, feel free to
straighten me out here) especially with the Darkstar cache module
made timing issues in the system bus a real concern. RAM that is of
questionable quality almost assuredly creates lockups, freezes, and
system bombs. That's likely what you experienced previously. So...

E. If you decide to go to 9.1 or just to 8.6 bumping the RAM to the
144 MB max would be a reasonable idea. Choose a RAM vendor that
accepts returns if it doesn't work. OWC is the preferred vendor of
some here; I've used RAMJET for the times I've needed RAM; there are
several quality shops to work with. 5 volt, 60ns, 2k refresh EDO is
the preferred match with the motherboard RAM.

F. I'm certain your next question will be about the SCSI CD-ROM
drive and the OS inability to recognize the drive after you upgraded.
