The ver. 4.1 flasher from Adaptec seems to flash the Adaptec 2940UW without modification to the card. I've heard from a few folks who had problems, but quite a number of others for whom it seemed to work trouble free. So it's worth a try if one wishes to convert a PC 2940UW and one does not get jollies from soldering as I do. :-) As far as I know the ver. 4.1 is the only one for which this works. You can attempt it with the ver. 3.0 firmware, e.g., and it will attempt it, and then fail, leaving you with a card that doesn't work on the Mac or the PC until you make some other firmware arrangements. If one has access to a PC a prudent thing to do is to download the PC 2940U2W package from Adaptec because this includes a utility called "Flasher" or maybe "Flash". Adaptec's Flasher works on several of their cards and will let you read out the firmware in the 2940UW and store it in a file on your hard drive or a floppy. So you can read out the PC firmware, store it safely away, and then experiment away. I don't know if it's still available for download. Adaptec's ftp site used to be accessible and it had a copy of everything they'd ever made available for download. They closed that down and one must use the much inferior web page downloads.
