The 2940U2W is an LVD card. The 2940UW is a Single Ended SCSI card
with half the theoretical throughput. My experience is that the
2940UW is rock solid in the S900/J700 but that the 2940U2W is quirky.

The PowerDomain (Mac) flasher ver. 4.1 will work on the PC 2940UW in
a Mac. As I noted in my previous message there have been mixed
reports about how reliable the card is afterwards.

I recommend downloading the PC 2940U2W package, because as far as I
know Adaptec never released a firmware updater for the PC 2940UW, so
in order to get the Flasher Utility one must download some non-2940UW
package which contains it.

You only need a PC if you want to use the Flasher Utility. The use I
suggested was to copy out the PC firmware to disk. Then, if your
flashing experiments are unsuccessful you can use Flasher to put the
PC firmware back when you are done.

I doubt that Flasher will work with VPC because I found it very
finicky about which PCs it would work on. But who knows? Those
wacky folks at Connectix may have built VPC so that it looks just
like the kind of PC that Flasher likes.
