You need to work on the startup drive, which is not possible unless you boot from another drive or an external CD. More then likely you have a factory matshita CD drive which will not allow you to boot from a maintenance CD such as Norton or even a Apple system CD. This is a very condensed answer but the main thing for you to try to borrow an external CD drive such as a burner and force boot from that, (Cmd/Opt/Shft/Del). Good luck and welcome to the List.
