Hmmmm - might be a scsi problem if two devices have the same id on
the external chain - or it might be a termination problem as I don't know
the 610s very well. Is there a terminator on it? If not put one on and
try it. Or it may be that the hardware of the 610s is faulty. I know the
firmware can be upgraded but the eprom chip has to be removed to be
reprogrammed so it's not a DIY job. I think I have a complete 610s in
bits ( I used it to teach the fundamentals of scanning) stored away
somewhere - though I may have trashed it due to space problems. Is there
an error code given with the problem?
     What does the ASP say?
My 2400s is the only device id2 on the external scsi 1 bus and is
unterminated - which is odd as I have two unused external terminators but
never had any error problems with the scanner. I have a feeling that
termination is not such a problem when there is only one device on the
chain. I also have a feeling that some Umax scanners will self terminate
if they detect termination is required.
I don't know VueScan either - as MagicScan is very professional for
a free app (especially bundled with Binuscan) and I never felt the need
to look at other drivers.
The MagicScan download is four parts - but I can see the problem
with the 24k line - I'm in the sticks too with no broadband or cable - I
can send you MagicScan 4.5 on an 8cm CD (210 meg - they're so cute) if
you want it. The airmail is a pittance.
I guess most folks on the list learn what they know through problem
solving hardware and software issues but I've never had a scanner problem
- touching my head at the moment.

After a lifetime of watching films from the 'golden era' of
Hollywood places like the Sierras and Sonora almost seem fictional to me
- like Middle Earth - mention Orthanc I think of Saruman - mention
Sierras I think of Bogart (High Sierras) - mention Sonora I think of
Brando (One Eyed Jacks).
