NewerTech ( the old company which is now gone)
Wrote a guide for memory use in Macs. I've found that many ram sellers
use it as a guide due to a lack of other guides to use. It has several
serious errors in it. The above quote is one of them. It wasn't true
when it was written and it's not true now! It was going to be changed
in an update to the guide but was never written due to company going
under. I am referring to " UMAX machines faster then 180mhz will not
function properly with EDO memory" false info!!!!!!!!!"
So while it is possible you have some defective memory I wouldn't go
out and replace it all based on this old defective info! Shame on
Sonnet for using old defective info. It is possible their G800 upgrades
has issues with some ram but to use an old defective guide as reason
for saying this is crazy IMHO. In fact I am sure running at 800mhz is
going to cause issues with some ram. However 128 ram currently being
sold should work unless it is defective.

Writing a FAQ for memory isn't going to be easy. It seems to me
everyone has a "Hooray for our side" attitude about this. What I mean
by that is look at the posts lately and over the years. It is clear
that what worked for one person doesn't always work for another . One
person says only FPM ram should be used failing to take into
consideration many have good luck with EDO. Also differences in the
S900/J700 C500/600 series of machines isn't being mentioned. Which
likely confuses newbies to the list.
I will admit my part in being of the EDO camp in past years. It seemed
to be true at the time. I had Macgurus to back me up and after all I
had both J700 and C series machines which both worked great with the
EDO ram. In fact C series machines seem to need EDO ram if you want to
run it with the full amount of ram which is 2 64mb chips. Is anyone
running a C series machine with 2 64mb ram chips that are anything but
EDO 2k refresh?
Part of the issue is RAM has changed over the years. It used to be RAM
was expensive but rarely defective. It was just a matter of finding
what would work in your machine. I have spoken with a local ram dealer
who used to make most of there own ram chips which they sold. It was
really more like putting the ram boards together using high quality ram
chips they bought. This is now less then 10 percent of their business.
They can't compete with the cheap stuff coming in from all over. RAM
for our machines is now made using cheap PC 3.3 volt ram chips and a 5
volt converter chip so it works in our machines. The original type ram
is no longer even being made as far as I can tell. The amount of
defective ram is sky high compared to the old style ram but the price
is right!
It has always been important to buy from a source that would replace
defective ram or ram that doesn't work in your machine .It is even more
important now days with all the crap being sold.
Any FAQ that picks either EDO or FPM is going to be suspect to many.
This will need to be looked at hard and long before any final FAQ
memory guide can be written IMHO Will S
