Dear listers - This is OT but somewhat relevant these days for many who are eager for high speed service. I am posting this in case some of you are in a similar situation.
After much mulling and delays, signed up with Verizon for DSL. Verizon is offering a Veriations package that brings down the cost of DSL to $29 for the first six months and $35 afterwards with no long-term contract. This involves using Verizon for all phone services, which can be fixed with unlimited calls. After crunching the numbers, including getting rid of the second phone line, it works in our favor by a considerable amount. The Verizon switching center only several blocks away is also the motivating factor. If your location is ideal for DSL and Verizon serves your area it may be worth looking into. I've been very pleased with Earthlink and have unbelieveable modem connection speed, but it finally came to a point where DSL is actually less expensive for us. Well, at least for the time being until Verizon jacks up the price after reeling in the subscribers. I am hoping the only other provider, nTelos, hangs in there during their Chapter 11.
