Are you saying if and when I trash 8.1 that I > will no longer be able to boot from an Apple install CD? ---- Bernie - I'm guessing you already know about all this, but anyhoo.... Most if not all Supermacs were supplied with non-Apple ROM'd Matshita drives of various flavors which would boot from only the Supermac Systems disc, which contained a light version of CD-ROM Toolkit as the CD driver. Many folks have posted success stories of hacking or using different versions of Apple drivers but I never had any luck. I did not spent too much time trying to solve this problem, however. Instead, I use several external SCSI CD burners for force booting from any properly prepared startup CDs and then load the Apple OS install disc in the factory Matshita drive for installations. Some may wonder why I don't just load the Apple OS CDs in the external drive for bootup and install - well, this seems to cause problems when using an OS install CD supplied with a Apple CPU. In my case, it's the set of OS 9.1 Software Install and Restore CDs that came with a G4/466. I do a custom install to weed out any unnecessary stuff.
