Replacing the S900 logic board with a 9500/9600 would present a lot of challenges. The port arrangement for the 9500/9600 is very different and you'd be into some serious sheet metal and dremel (or snips and files) work. The hold downs for the 9500/9600 are slots for flat plastic hooks, not screw holes. The 9600 uses a different power supply. The connector is very different. The Umax power supply or a standard ATX can be adapted but it's another issue. Articles on adapting an ATX to the 9600 are available on xlr8yourmac.com. When it's all said and done, I think you'd be better off just getting a whole 9600, unless you have a lot of time on your hands or a hankering for a fabrication project. A Power Tower Pro motherboard would be less of a challenge because it uses the ATX form factor, which is what the S900 uses. The rectangular port area would still be different (where the S900's SCSI, ADB and sound out ports are) but at least the PTP's ports are actually located on that rectangle. Some of the 9600's are not. So, to install a PTP in an S900 case the primary thing you'd need to do is to replace the rectangular EMI shield (AKA I/O Gasket) and replace the power supply with a standard ATX. The PTP uses a standard ATX PS. You can get a template of the PTP ports here: <http://www.io.com/~trag/>. There are four files prefaced "PTP_". The first three are picts, so download them and open them in SimpleText or Picture Viewer. You won't be able to view them in your browser. The PTP_template file has scale lines on it. When you print the template out, measure the lines to see if they're the right length and adjust your print size accordingly. Once they're the right length, if you cut a piece of sheet metal to match that paper template, it will cover the rear of the PTP motherboard properly. >The processor pulled from my s900 is a 604e/250mhz. Can it be used >sucessfully in a Macintosh PPC? i.e a 7500 or 7600? Yes. Apple 604e cards which are faster than 233 MHz cannot be used, because they are all Mach V cards and are wired a little differently. But Umax and Power Computing 604e cards are wired the standard way, so the 250 Mhz Umax and PCC cards work fine in any Power Surge machine.
