Power Surge is Apple's name for the family of machines built around
the Hammerhead memory controller. This family includes three
generations of Apple machines and many clones.

The Power Surge machines are: 7500, 8500, 9500 (1st Gen.), 7600,
8600, 9600 (2nd Gen.), 7300, 8600 Enhanced, 9600 Enhanced (3rd.
Gen.), PowerTower Pro, PowerWave, S900, J700 and Daystar Genesis
(clones).

All of the above machines are built on the same architecture, have
the same type of CPU slot (except the Enhanced (AKA Kansas) 8600 and
9600) and use essentially the same ROM. I've taken the ROM off of
the Kansas motherboards and installed it in earlier machines and it
works fine, which is what one would expect given that the hardware is
almost identical.

The Catalyst family is closely related but is built around the
Platinum memory controller instead of the Hammerhead. But it uses
the same Bandit chip for PCI slot control and the Grand Central chip
for interrupt handling as the Power Surge Family.

The Catalyst family included just the 7200 from Apple, but in several
revisions, oh, and the 8200 in the European market, and from Power
Computing, the PowerCurve, PowerCenter, PowerTower (no Pro), and
PowerCenter Pro.

Strangely, the Kansas ROMs work in the Catalyst family as well.
