If you do make an attempt with an external CD drive, after the reboot boing hold down ctrl-opt-shft-del buttons and wait until DiskWarrior becomes the boot disc. It should default to 9.2.
I've used Disk Warrior several times on my 10.2.4 disk when booted off the CD (beige G3). It has worked fine. As another mentioned, step 6 can take a loooong time, especially if you've got a lot of problems to fix. Be patient. I've had DW resurrect disks that were as good as doorstops by every other method I'd tried.
The reason you can't boot off the CD is probably that it runs OS 9.2, and as you probably know the Umaxs don't do 9.2 without some 3rd party software in place.
BTW, there is an OS X version of DW out or soon to be out. Ours is on backorder.
