I can read CD's, but not write them. 1a) Toast 5.2 times-out with an error "The Drive reported an error: Sense Key=UNIT ATTENTION, Sense Code=0x29, POWERON, RESET, OR BUS DEVICE RESET OCCURRED". 1b) Finder reports it as unsupport when I insert a blank CDR 1c) Apple System Profiler lists it as "Disk Burning Not supported". I checked the Philips site to be sure I have latest firmware.
OS X's support for CD/RW drives is extremely poor. Even many internal IDE drives are "Not Supported For Burning". There's no good reason for it, since they all use the same command set (ATAPI).
However, there is a site (which I was looking for but now can't find/remember), that has instructions for getting MANY "unsupported" CD/RW drives to work in OS X. It's a matter of hacking the driver (I think) much like we used to hack Drive Setup in OS 9 to use "Unsupported" hard drives (IOW, drives other than Apple's)!
My CD/RW is also not supported by X, but I just now have a need to use it, and was looking for the above mentioned site. Anyone know where this is?
