I thought I successfully flashed it with a borrowed Compaq but after I
later ran the v208 on the Mac things didn't go according to plan: OS
9.2.2 wouldn't boot without some extensions disabled and 10.2.6 freezes
at the gray Apple logo.

The card was purchased from Allstar via this link given on this list:
419TT8BVHWK432TN5>

On the back it says Radeon 7000 32Mb DDR PCI. Part number is
1024-2C02-00-SA. Prior to the flash it was working in the Compaq.

I made a floppy with the various things I thought I'd need and got
started. The Compaq had Win 95 and was booted in each instance
mentioned below into real DOS, not a DOS window.

Following the directions written by Mark Douma I ran FLASHROM -i. I got
no errors and saw output similar, if not the same as his example. I
remember the utility revealed the ROMSIZE as 128kb (0x20000). It was
the only card in the computer, so the adapter number was 0.

Next I backed up the PC ROM by typing FLASHROM -s 0 pc7k.bin 128

That seemed to go OK so I flashed it for the Mac:
FLASHROM -pm 0 mac7k.bin -f

That also seemed to go OK so I shut down and removed the card. I'd
forgotten I didn't have the ROM Update for the Mac side so I put the
card back in the PC to see if I could flash it there, as per the
instructions. This would be the command:
FLASHROM -pm 0 m208full.bin -f

I didn't get that far because the PC now wouldn't boot. I should have
expected the screen to stay blank (it did, since I partially flashed it
to Mac) but the OS wouldn't load. Luckily the Compaq had motherboard
video so I connected the monitor to it. Still no boot and the screen
stayed blank.

Only by removing the Sapphire would it boot, but I didn't try booting
straight from a DOS floppy (which I didn't have anyway.) I have a
feeling that won't work and I can't go back to the PC now. Am I right?

Today was my first opportunity to try the ROM 208 Updater, which I
downloaded from ATi. My first problem was freezing during boot in 9.2.2.
I disabled almost everything but CarbonLib and Quicktime, since the
Update application needed both. Here's what happened:

There was a very briefly a box displayed that looked like it had
recognized the card and showed the model or something and them a huge
dialog box, nearly all-blank. At the top it said: ERROR programming
device (or similar). The only things inside the dialog box were an OK
button and what appeared to be the location of the "problem":
Slot-C1:RV100-A12

I know that the first part just identified the PCI slot.

Restarted and got no video from the card. Restarted in 10.2.6 and got
the hang.

Back in 9.2.2 ASP showed:
name: pci1002,908
model: -1
ROM: Not available (gee, no kidding!)
card rev: 0
vendor: 1002 (presumeably ATi)

Could it matter what slot the flash is done in on the Mac side, and/or
is there any hope of booting from a DOS floppy on the PC side to
attempt completion there if it apparently prevents all booting now?

Looking back, the only option for the initial flash would have been to
run FLASHRM3 (renamed) instead of the normal one, but according to the
directions that should only have been necessary if an "ASIC" or "reg
map" error was encountered.

That seems to limit the blame either on my buying the wrong card or
using the wrong ATi ROM updater (the only one available I could find at
ATi), unless I should have moved it into another slot in the Mac. That
seems a longshot since nowhere have I seen that being an issue in order
for the ROM update to run. I tried running it several times and got the
same result.

Sincerely,

Hosed
