I've never had any issue with my S900, PM8500, or my PM8600 and sound under 9.2. Running under OSX is another story. All three of them do the exact same thing that you have described. The internal speaker always is on (although very low volume) and the main system volume doesn't work. This is a known problem with OSX on non-native G3 machines.
