I have a line on an "XLR8 ZIF Carrier, and ZIF
processor." I'm told that "the carrier allows for using your choice of ZIF
G3 or G4 up to about 600 MHz. It is usable in most clones, including the
C500."

No, that last sentence is incorrect. The ZIF carrier will only work --- and fit --- in Macs and clones (like the SuperMac S900, 700) with the right CPU slot. The C500 doesn't have a CPU slot, just that ZIF connection.

The next obvious question is, can you use just that guy's 266MHz ZIF CPU alone and put it in your ZIF slot that's already on the C500's motherboard? No, it's a different kind of ZIF.

For a few precious blinks MacTell (& one or two others?) actually sold special G3 ZIFs that could directly replace a C500/600 ZIF CPU. Like the Cache Doubler 80, also rare.

While becoming harder to find, that Sonnet "L2" G3 upgrade you mentioned earlier is the way to go. The advantage to that is that it could also be transferred later to an Apple 6360, 6400, 6500 or compatible later on.
