That's why I like the idea of juicing up an old S900 the way I have to run OS X - no money goes to Apple!
If no money went to Apple then where'd you get OS X from...?
Not to mention the inconvenient fact that were it not for Apple, Umax wouldn't have been building S900s in the first place.
At one time it was evident Apple used better quality parts; keyboards were more solid, had a real heft to them. I haven't had a hard disk fail on me yet (knock wood), though some have been in use for over a decade. Switches haven't worn out, as I've repeatedly seen happen on the low-bid peecees at work. I haven't bought a new Mac in awhile, so I don't know if this is still true, but in my experience, extreme price differentials have to made up somewhere; a really cheap computer is likely to be ... well, a really cheaply made computer.
Are Apple's products overpriced? I dunno. What's the "real" value of anything? Some say it's whatever you can get someone to pay you for it. Would Apple sell more computers if the prices were lower? I don't know that, either. But I would assume Jobs & Co. have researched this and decided the extra number of units they could sell wouldn't return as much profit as higher margins.
Would a $200 Linux box be ok for most people? Of course. Approximately 97.44% of people sitting in front of any computer don't need or have a clue how to use the speed and power they have. Apple's not going to win the market share game---it lost any chance of doing that 15 years ago. The goal seems to be producing a niche, boutique product geared towards loyalists. Nothing wrong with that. Works for a lot of companies (Ben & Jerry's, BMW, etc etc.) More power to 'em, and I'll be able to enjoy last year's (or the year before the year before's) model.
Peace,
George
