This is the SuperMacs list. This subject has nothing to do with using
Umax SuperMac computers. This thread has 24 hours to come to an end.

No, it was more that Macs were better at half the speed -- but they
hadn't been at half the speed for several years. That was completely due
to Apple's reliance on the Motorola G4 processor. IBM has been able to
make faster CPUs for a long time, but Apple wanted AltiVec.

You make your bed and then you lie in it. With the Pentium4 at 3.2 GHz,
even a costly dual G4/1.42 GHz system will have a hard time keeping up
with the best software.

Thank goodness Apple finally woke up, got out of that bed, and picked the
PowerPC 970. Dual 2.0 GHz 970s will smoke anything on the Wintel side in
real world testing -- Photoshop, ripping MP3s, working with digital
video, etc. They may lag a bit in gaming, but who needs over 200 frames
per second to play a game?

Based on a few preliminary figures run on demo hardware and prerelease
versions of OS X 10.2.7, it appears that the PPC 970 is approximately 25%
more powerful than the G4. And we're talking real application tests here,
not SPEC tests that only test the CPU itself.

Dual 2.0 GHz 970s would already be 40% faster than the dual G4/1.42 based
on clock speed, but with the other efficiencies I suspect they'll come
closer to offering 75% more performance than the top-end G4.

We'll know more when the magazines and websites get their hands on
something besides prototypes running an unreleased version of the OS, but
for those who have tasks that require the ultimate level of power, the
Intel world will have nothing on Apple come August.
