Hi Will,
Thanks for the info, as I am trying to use a C500/603ev/180 computer. Quite
a difference from the J700 I had been using.
A question for you - Just what is the difference between an ATA drive and an
IDE drive?

Thanks,

                                <<<Sybil>>>

Both the C500/600 came with 603e cpu's in the range of 160-240
(160,180,200,&240)
The early C500 also came in a 140MHz version. The C600 also came in a
280MHz version with cache doubler card. Which pushed the bus sped to a
(in it's day)whooping 80 MHz . The cache doubler was sold separately
and could be used with any of the Zif cpu's .In either the C500 or
C600. The 280 mhz 603e cpu runs at 240 without the cache doubler card.
The cache doubler which came with 1mb of L2 cache was a great idea in
it's day. The 80mhz bus speed really speeded things up. They still work
well but you can not use a PCI USB card with them.
For the record there were a few souped up C500 machines sold as J710's
at the end of the UMAX clone period . They were really nice and came
with better video more ram and a 604e CPU 200MHZ with yes the same Zif
socket as the regular C500/600. A few also came with a G3 250MHz Zif
cpu made by UMAX! The 604 and G3 Umax Zifs are really rare. I am lucky
enough to have one of perhaps 5 left over G3 250MHz Zif's that fit a
C500/600. I got it cheap where else on ebay from a Canadian guy who had
no idea what it was! He'd gotten it in a box of things he'd traded for.
When he said it said Umax G3 Zif and it wouldn't fit in either a S900
or Apple machine I knew what it was! As far as I know there were no
left over 604e Zif's to sell separately from the J710 machines. However
Mactell, Phase 5 and Newer tech all made G3 zifs that fit the C500/600
machines. They show up once in a while on ebay and or the lemswap list.
The great thing about the G3 zifs you can with a bit of work run OSX on
your C500/600 machine. It can't be done with the L2 upgrades. Our list
member Nils is very happy with his C600 running OSX. I believe he has a
Phase 5 G3 Zif upgrade in his C600.
I thought some of the newer list members might be interested in this
Umax history lesson. Will S
