Is there anything preventing you from using a C500 CPU in a C600 or vice versa ? I have a box of 6 CPUs I want to test. I bought a C500 to test them in and for some reason only the 200 or 240 MHz parts fire up in the C500. Now, it could be a conindence that the 180 Mhz parts (either BGA or QFP) dont work, but I kind of doubt it. I did notice the boards for the 180 vs to 200/240 have a slightly different layout.

I know of no reason why a 603 cpu that works in a C600 wouldn't work in a C500. In fact they are one and the same. The C500 came with 603 cpu's ranging from 140-240 in speed. The C600 160- 280 Hz. Only the C600 was sold with the 280 cpu but even it works in a C500 though at 240MHz until you add a cache doubler card which is needed to run at 280MHz with a 603 cpu. I seem to remember that some of the slower speed cards may have been 603 and not 603e cpu's but that shouldn't make a difference in which machines they work in. Now if the C500 has a cache doubler card installed that could be an issue. The cache doubler has jumper pins that have to be set differently for each cpu speed.
The only differences in the two machines that I can think of besides the case are:
C500 has a 2 slot PCI riser board which plugs into the motherboard. The C600 has a 3 PCI slot riser board which also has a comm 2 slot which takes either a modem card or ethernet card. The C500 uses a special long small power supply which the C600 's is more standard looking. Sorry I can't be more helpful. Will S
