Dave: I had a similar problem and posted it here, but got no response. I seem to recall that it was MPEG 4 videos that locked up my machine almost immediately, but overall stability was poor with other file types as well. Followed the same procedures you described (ie reinstalling, etc.) but no luck, so I've gone back to QT 5.02 which works just fine (except for the inability to playback MPEG 4's, which are becoming more and more common on the web).
