Only thing you have to do is log on when you check for e-mail. For web browsing, you're basically connected all the time when the router/modem are active. This was a topic earlier this year but I don't recall your name back then. The log-in software that comes on the CD from most providers can be a source of headaches to many folks, especially Mac users. Also, routers provide some sort of firewall protection, which I don't fully understand.
