A dual purpose FW/USB card will normally only work in the top two slots. I
had an Orange Micro FW/USB. Their "tech department" kept coming up with
excuses (er, suggestions) such as "upgrade your system software to ..." and
"your processor speed is too slow". Even after I did these things (including
upgrading to a NewerTech G4/400, the card didn't work properly. Interesting
thing, >none< of their literature, including on the box, said anything about
these rigid requirements, only "it will work with any PCI machine". To make
a long story shorter, they refused to give me an RMA, and I ended up giving
the card to my brother (using a PC) ... even in that machine it only "sorta"
works.

As mentioned in an earlier post to David Muller, I replaced my Orange Micro
with a VST Technology FW/USB card and it has work like a charm overall.
Unfortunately, I don't think they are around anymore ... perhaps e-Bay?

Just for the record, here is my slot configuration:

Slot #1 - Initio Miles UW SCSI card
Slot #2 - VST Tech FW/USB card
Slot #3 - ATI VR128 video card
Slot #4 - Digidesign Audiomedia III card
Slot #5 - Digidesign Samplecell II card
