I have a chip reader/programmer. The Flash ROM chip on Matrox cards of this period are of the 28F variety (discontinued), of the PLCC form-factor, soldered on the circuit board; the main suppliers were TI, AMD, Catalyst (CSi), ST (SGS-Thomson), and Intel. I have a Millennium II with the wrong version of the chip, and a friend used a special hot-air PLCC removal machine to take it off, and replaced it with a correct one from another (otherwise dead) card ready for the Mac conversion operation; a few minutes was all that was needed; but if you don't have the facilities it can be very tricky indeed! It was only a few years ago that Umax liquidated all its SuperMac spare parts and had them sold off at silly prices at Small Dog, and that included Mystique 220 cards with Mac firmware. Too bad there's none left... Anyway, some other manufacturers' firmware update application offers the option of saving the existing one to hard drive; the Mac version of Matrox's doesn't, and I wonder if the PC version of it does: in that case a good card can be put into a Windows machine, run the Windows version of the firmware updater, save the firmware file, and then cancel the operation. I do not have a PC (thank goodness), nor do I have a Mac version of the Mystique 220 so I am none the wiser! All the best, Sam. -- SuperMacs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
