What did those of us that bought these NEW actually think we were getting? Let's be real here... the 9600 at the time was upwards of $2000 more. But looking back, maybe it was a case of getting what you pay for.
Would you like some cheese to go with that whine? Like you *always* "get what you pay for" when you buy a new Mac from Apple! I wouldn't buy a new *anything* from Apple - always overpriced and underpowered, from the G5s down to the iPods.
Like I wrote a little farther below... if you had read that far... I have a Mac Plus, IIsi, and 6100 that still boot. All are much older than the Umax and exhibited similar usage. The only Apple-made product I have ever had problems with (other than obligatory HD failures) was a 2001 iBook with a bad DVD. 11 months old, Apple replaced DVD and had it back in 24 hours - free of charge. That's what you get for the premium price - which currently isn't much of a premium.... maybe $50??
My S900 has been rock solid since I bought it new on eBay for $250 about 3 years ago. It has 9.1, 9.2.2 and OS X 10.2.6 installed. It has a 450 mhz G4, 700 megs RAM, IDE and SCSI hard drives and an IDE CD/RW. It has an ATI Radeon 7000 video card.
My S900 was rock solid from when i bought it in 1997... NOT 3 years ago. It's been a slow degradation until it's death. Looking back... has it been worth the hassles? NO. I expected responses from jerks like you... thanks for reaffirming me.
